Pain patate is a traditional Haitian dish that is often enjoyed as a snack or dessert. It is a sweet potato bread or cake that is moist and flavorful. Here's a basic recipe for making pain patate:
Ingredients:
2 cups of mashed sweet potatoes (boiled and mashed)
1 cup of brown sugar
1/2 cup of coconut milk
1/4 cup of evaporated milk
2 tablespoons of butter (softened)
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon of grated nutmeg
A pinch of salt
Raisins or chopped nuts (optional)
Banana leaves or parchment paper for lining the baking dish
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed sweet potatoes and brown sugar. Mix them together until the sugar is well incorporated with the sweet potatoes.
Add the coconut milk, evaporated milk, and softened butter to the sweet potato mixture. Mix well to combine.
Stir in the vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, grated nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. You can adjust the level of spice to your liking.
If you wish to add raisins or chopped nuts, fold them into the mixture at this stage.
Line a baking dish with banana leaves or parchment paper. This will prevent the pain patate from sticking to the dish and make it easier to remove.
Pour the sweet potato mixture into the prepared baking dish and smooth the top.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes or until the pain patate is firm and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Once done, remove the pain patate from the oven and let it cool before slicing it into squares or rectangles.
Serve the pain patate as a delicious snack or dessert. It can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature.
Pain patate is a delightful Haitian treat that is perfect for special occasions, holidays, or simply as a comforting, sweet snack. Enjoy!
